CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT PLAN

A good classroom management plan is important for creating a learning-friendly environment.

In the classroom, I display three posters: Classroom Safety, Classroom Rules, and Classroom Jobs for Students. I also distribute pocket-sized copies of these posters and ask students to paste them into their notebooks. On the first day of class, I discuss all three of the posted guidelines. I review them with students during the school year as needed.

Classroom Safety—I use materials that are safe for both children and adults. I organize and label everything. I show students the proper use and care of all supplies and equipment. I also instruct them to immediately notify me if they see a defective item or one that is in poor condition, so that we can repair or replace it.

Classroom Rules—Students are always expected to arrive to class prepared, ready to listen, and give every task their best effort. Good behavior is acknowledged in the form of a personalized, cheerful note. If inappropriate behavior occurs and is not promptly corrected, I will speak with the school counselor. If such behavior persists, I will set up a meeting with the parent or, if necessary, with the principal, so we can work together to overcome the problem.

Classroom Jobs for Students—In taking on responsibilities, students join together to build and maintain a safe, tidy community. I assign only three jobs: paper handler, display helper, and clean-up inspector, titles chosen from Shoshana Wolfe’s book, Your Best Year Yet! A Guide to Purposeful Planning & Effective Classroom Organization. As students start their assignments, I show them how each job is done and supervise them until I am sure they can do the job by themselves. To ensure that everyone gets a chance to learn the three classroom jobs, students are responsible for each job in rotation.

An organized, detailed classroom management plan serves an educational purpose: to improve students’ skills and make the learning experience more rewarding for the students and teacher.
